Gunshots lead to drug arrest

Officers responding to a call reporting gunshots took a Ruston man into custody for drug and weapon charges.

Ruston Police were dispatched to East Line Avenue near Edgewood Street Sunday evening to investigate a report of several gunshots. A group of men were found standing in the street near a SUV. Several empty shell casings were located around and under the SUV. A bag of suspected marijuana was seen on the center console.

The owner of the SUV, Monterrious McWain, 22, of Ruston, was present. He admitted a firearm and additional narcotics were inside the vehicle. During a search of the SUV, officers found a 9mm pistol next to the driver’s seat. A bag on the passenger seat contained numerous large bags of suspected marijuana, numerous small bags of suspect MDMA (ecstasy), digital scales, and a box of plastic bags typically used for packaging drugs.

McWain reportedly claimed ownership of all the substances and the firearm. He stated he pled guilty to a 2021 arrest for drug-related felonies and was a convicted felon.

McWain was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of MDMA with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm in the presence of controlled substances.

Bail was set at $55,000.
