Remembering Margarette Elaine Cockerham

Margarette Elaine Cockerham

Mrs. Margarette Elaine Cockerham, age 81 of Ruston, LA was born November 12, 1940 to Ruth and Charles Brown in Monroe, LA, and she passed away October 11, 2022. As a child, her father operated a tugboat, and she spent hours with him along the Ouachita River. Elaine enjoyed going to and hosting tea parties and playing at the Biedenharn Garden when she was very young.

Miss Biedenharn always welcomed Elaine when she wanted to come. She said that Miss Emmylou had a key hidden outside, and she knew right where it was so that she could go any time she wanted. Elaine said that it often felt like the Secret Garden. She also often reminisced about getting on a bus and going to watch a movie for only a nickel. Elaine had a kinship with animals. You could hear her whistle in the mornings and watch as the birds would come into the yard. The squirrels would draw near to the two trees where Elaine placed peanuts and seeds for them, and they would get within three feet of her to get the peanuts. Whenever the squirrels or birds began to fight over the food, Elaine would talk to them like they were children, and it was like they understood what she was saying.

Elaine thanked the Lord daily for the blessings in her life. She loved going to church and was a member of Grace Bible Baptist Church. Elaine loved to read her Bible. She kept her friends and family in her prayers, and she enjoyed helping people in any way she could. Elaine loved to bless others and enjoyed being blessed.

She was preceded in death by her husbands: Tommy Fletcher, James Elledge, Bobby Brady and Herbert E. Cockerham; brothers: Hugh Roy Brown, Clyde Brown, Charles Brown and Lawrence Brown; and sister Ruth Brown Bradshaw.

Elaine is survived by her sons Mark Edward Fletcher and wife Alicia of Savannah, GA and Larry B. Brady and wife Darlene of Pontotoc, MS; daughters: Sandra and husband Scott Young of Homer, LA, Wendy and husband Mark Pesnell of Choudrant, LA, and Sheila Brady of Pontotoc, MS; sons: Benny Cockerham and wife Betty, Herbert Cockerham and wife Rita and Calvin Edmiston, Sr.; daughter Janice Cockerham and husband Rodney Wheeler; 18 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; 15 cats and one dog, each with their own special place in her heart; and a host of family and friends. She will be missed but will be carried forever in our hearts.
