GSU volleyball continues impressive play

Grambling won for the seventh time in eight SWAC matches defeating Alcorn State Sunday.

The Grambling State University volleyball team showed some signs of rust after being off for nearly two weeks, but the Lady Tigers completed a season sweep of Alcorn State, 3-0, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match on Sunday evening at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

Grambling State (10-8 overall, 7-1 SWAC) took the opening set, 25-19 and held off the Braves in the second, 25-20. The Lady Tigers completed the sweep in the third set, 25-18.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set

  • Grambling State jumped out to a 3-0 lead before a hitting error gave Alcorn State its first points
  • The Lady Tigers extended the advantage to 9-2 after an attacking error by the Braves
  • A kill by Zyonn Smith gave GSU a commanding 13-4 lead
  • Alcorn State (2-20, 1-8) closed the gap to 13-9 off a pair of service aces and a kill by Demya Tate
  • Back came Grambling State with three straight kills by Adaizah Millett to push the advantage to 16-9
  • The Braves continued to battle back, cutting deficit to 16-13
  • The Lady Tigers pushed the margin to 20-15, but again Alcorn State remained close, trimming the deficit to 21-18
  • However, Grambling State got a service ace by Jayden James, a hitting error on Alcorn State and a block solo by Millett to close out the set, 25-19

Second Set

  • The Lady Tigers opened the set with a 7-3 advantage
  • Alcorn State rallied, cutting the deficit to 9-7, before a service error turned the ball over to GSU
  • The Braves continued to keep the set close, trailing 14-11, but GSU got a kill by James and a block by Maggie Plush to push the margin to 16-11
  • Alcorn State closed the gap to 17-16 after a kill by Mikenz Young-Mullins
  • Back came Grambling State, extending the advantage to 22-17
  • Kills by Plush and James sealed the 25-20 victory

Third Set

  • Alcorn State opened the set with a 5-3 lead, forcing Grambling State to call a timeout
  • A kill and service ace by Haley Gomez, along with a kill by Plush, gave the Lady Tigers an 8-6 advantage
  • With GSU leading, 9-8, the Lady Tigers used a 6-1 run to push the lead to 14-9
  • The Braves cut into GSU’s lead, trimming the deficit to 16-14
  • However, Grambling State got points by James and Plush to extend the lead to 21-15
  • Alcorn State never got any closer as Grambling State completed the three-set victory, 25-18

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State finished with 39 kills in 95 total attacks, with 17 errors (hitting .232)
  • The Lady Tigers recorded 46 digs, 34 assists and nine service aces
  • Jayden James led the way offensively with 10 kills, along with six digs
  • Adaizah Millett tallied nine kills (hitting. 412)
  • Hillary English and Ana Calderon each recorded 15 assists
  • Nyah Ellis paced the defense with 13 digs, while Zyonn Smith added 11
  • Alcorn State finished with 25 kills in 92 total attacks, with 17 errors
  • The Braves registered 33 digs, 19 assists and six service aces
  • Mikenz Young-Mullins led the offense with seven kills
