Suspicious vehicle leads to drug arrests

Two men were arrested Sunday afternoon after a Ruston police officer investigated a suspicious vehicle.

Officer D. Smith spotted a vehicle parked at a location known for drug transactions. The occupants acted suspiciously when the officer questioned them.

A record check of Jerry Wayne Melton, 28, of Ruston indicated he was wanted for failure to appear in Ruston City Court on a charge of driving without a license.

The driver, Donovan Shovan, 50, of Bossier City denied the presence of drugs in the vehicle. In a search Officer Smith located a backpack containing a pipe commonly used for smoking methamphetamine. Suspected synthetic marijuana was found in the back seat. Both men were arrested and transported to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center. During a search by detention center staff, synthetic marijuana was found concealed in Shovan’s underwear.

Shovan was booked for possession of synthetic marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and introduction of contraband into a correctional facility.

Melton was booked for failure to appear in court, possession of synthetic marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Melton’s bail was set at $2,000 and Shovan’s at $14,000.
