Both Ruston varsity basketball teams picked up road wins on Friday with the Lady Bearcats beating Haughton by a final score of 51-44, and the Bearcats beating Lakeview in a defensive battle 38-31 at the 2022 Saline Tournament.
“Tonight was a good step in the right direction,” Lady Bearcat head coach Meredith Graf said. “We a faced a quality opponent in Haughton, who didn’t go away. We learned several things about us an individuals and as a team. I’m thankful we could get the win while learning valuable things about ourselves.”
The Lady Bearcats led 20-17 at halftime, and were led in scoring overall by junior Jaliyah McWain with 19 points. Junior Zaccheya Jackson finished with 14 points for Ruston.
For the boys, senior Braylon McNeal led the Bearcats with 15 points. All of Ruston’s fourth quarter points came from free throws.
“I’m really proud of our effort,” Bearcat head coach Ryan Bond said. “This was our third game in four nights. We battled through several bad stretches, and we have another tough game Saturday.”
The boys varsity team will play another game in the Saline Tournament today against Winnfield with tip off set for 5:15 p.m. The girls will return to action in the St. Thomas More Tournament in Lafayette starting on Monday.
