Both Ruston soccer teams picked up wins this week with the girls beating Northwood at home 3-2 Monday night, while the boys won their match 2-1 over West Ouachita.
For the girls, Raegan McCulloch scored on an assist from McKenzie Oakley, while Morgan Foster knocked in a header on a corner kick from Mia Tapia.
Tapia then scored off a free kick from 25 yards out.
On the boys’ side, Carlos Sanchez knocked in a goal from a throw-in in the first five minutes into the game. The Chiefs would tie the match in the 60th minute, but a 30-yard shot from Koy Tolar in the last few minutes gave Ruston the 2-1 lead.
“Today was a battle,” head coach Erich Hankamer said, who picked up his first win at the helm of this Bearcat program. “Giving up the tying goal stung a bit as we had most of the ball. This group showed great heart to get the win tonight. Getting our first win of the season is huge and even better it came in district play.”
Trenton Richard recorded three saves on the night. As a team, the Bearcats finished with 13 shots on goal.
The boys will head to Parkway on Monday, Dec. 12, while girls return to action Thursday, Dec. 15 against OCS.
