Ruston High School’s indoor track and field team went south for the LSU High School Last Chance Qualifier this past weekend and saw multiple high placing finishes in various events.
“I was very pleased with the results of another two weeks of training for our athletes,” Ruston indoor track and field coach Trey Smith said. “The last two weeks of inclement weather posed a multitude of challenges for daily practice, but our kids are very resilient and found a way to push through. Their efforts were rewarded with a great day on the track. All of our sprint relay teams improved their times from the meet before, and our distance squads continued to move up to the top of the Division 1 leaderboards.
“We are continuing to get more race experience that will be very helpful in the upcoming championship races. Our kids are getting very excited, and I am looking forward to seeing them perform in another two weeks.”
In the boys’ mile, Bryar Madden (No. 2, Division I) took first place with a time of four minutes, 26.87 seconds. The relay team (No. 3, Division I) of Zoie Holstead, Parker Nations, Sara Naff, and Sydney Owens took second in the girls’ 4×800-meter relay at 10:00.87.
Lily Garrett (No. 3, Division I) took third place in the 1600-meter at 5:18.22, while also placing sixth in the 3200-meter at (11.27.29), where Garrett is ranked No. 4 in Division I.
The boys’ 4×200-meter relay team (No. 6, Division I) of Jordan McWain, Kendrick Jones, Darius James and Dylar Richmond took sixth place at 1:32.46. The same team in the 4×400 is ranked No. 6 in Division I, as well.
Sophia Roberson (No. 14, Division I) placed tenth in the triple jump after a mark of 33-feet, 1-inch., while Faith Miller (No. 17, Division I) placed 15th in the triple jump at 32’3.75″.
The Bearcats will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 18, at the LHSAA Division1 Indoor Track & Field State Championships at LSU.
