A Lincoln Parish deputy saw an apparent drag race early Sunday morning that led to the arrest of two men on traffic and weapons charges.
The deputy saw a black sedan and a white SUV leaving The Revelry parking lot on the South I-20 Service Road at a high rate of speed about 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The vehicles entered Interstate 20 eastbound, the sedan without its headlights on.
After reaching speeds of 120 miles per hour, the sedan was stopped but the SUV fled the scene. Damarcus A. Brooks, 26, and Raunault G. Goldsmith, Jr., 22, driver and passenger, were arrested near the La. Highway 33 exit.
Brooks reportedly told officers he was drag racing his brother who was driving the SUV. A search of Brooks’ vehicle revealed two loaded semi-automatic 9mm pistols under Goldsmith’s seat and a box of ammunition in the glove box in front of him.
A criminal history check showed Goldsmith was a felon with arrests in Ruston and New Orleans for illegal carrying of weapons.
Brooks was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for drag racing, speeding 31+ miles over the speed limit, reckless operation of a vehicle, no headlights, and no turn signal. His bail was set at $6,500.
Goldsmith was booked for two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His bail was set at $160,000 but he is also being held for the Louisiana Department of Corrections—Probation & Parole.
