With dance moves like Janet Jackson, a local dancer hopes to excel his craft in the competitive world of dance.

28-year-old Jakeem Smith, a Ruston native, hopes to make his dreams come true.

“Dance has been a way to express myself for a long time,” Smith said.

Furthermore, dance has been the outlet for Smith to express himself through body language at rough times. It gives a peace that helps comprehend difficult challenges.

“My body tells the story; it’s my safe place when I don’t have an explanation,” said Smith.

At the age of 8 years old, Smith realized he could dance. His first performance was at a Black History parade, and ever since, he has given it his all.  Smith now can perform ballet, modern, jazz, African and hip hop. However, the list goes on and on.

“I love hip hop because it’s challenging with a unique variety of different flavors,” Smith said.

His favorite class was in Dallas, Texas with the Les Twins, who are Beyonce’s dancers. The experience for Smith was amazing he said because more than 75 people also shared the platform with him.

“When my group was called to dance, I felt like the best one because I fed off other people’s energy,” Smith said.

With it being advanced taught by professionals, Smith realized he loved a challenge.

Additionally, dedication can lead to the industry.

Smith’s next move is auditioning for the Dallas Cowboys Rhythm and Blue Dancers. It’s a coed team that is versatile and travels through the U.S. to compete.

For Smith, they incorporate styles from all over the world, including an Arabian style mixed with west coast vibes.

“I been working really hard for this and staying in shape so I can make the cut,” Smith said. “This is an opportunity I can’t let go.”
