City of Ruston hopes to take the sting out of National Mosquito Awareness Week

Special to the LPJ

For National Mosquito Awareness Week, the City of Ruston has partnered with Vector Disease Control International (VDCI), a company that specializes in mosquito control.

VDCI’s goal is to locate and reduce the population of disease potential mosquitoes to help lower the prevalence of vector-borne diseases. This requires a multi-faceted approach involving various stakeholders, including government agencies, public health organizations, community leaders, and individuals.

Integrated mosquito management strategies are implemented by focusing on surveillance, source reduction, larviciding (or treating for immature mosquitoes), and adulticide applications, along with educational efforts that reinforce personal protection efforts.

Surveillance plays a crucial role in monitoring mosquito populations and identifying potential disease transmission hotspots. By collecting and analyzing data on mosquito activity, VDCI professionals can implement targeted interventions to prevent outbreaks and minimize the risk to public health.

VDCI uses the LSU Disease Diagnostic Laboratory to test the local mosquitoes for multiple diseases such as West Nile Virus, St. Louis Encephalitis, and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Even with the
efforts from VDCI to minimize the mosquito population and potential disease transmission, it is necessary for individuals to take steps to ensure their personal protection.

Making sure that there is no standing water around your home is one method of protection. Also, personal protection is vital in minimizing the risk of mosquito bites and subsequent infections. The use of mosquito repellents, wearing protective clothing, and repairing window and door screens can provide an added layer of defense against mosquito bites.

A list of approved repellents can be found at the Centers for Disease Control website at https://www.cdc.gov/mosquitoes/mosquito-bites/prevent-mosquito-bites.html. Of course, always read the label before use and follow the guidelines provided within.

VDCI provides home inspections and treatment, as needed, at no cost to Rustonresidents as a service provided by the City of Ruston. Residents may call our office directly at 318-254-2083. If calling after hours or if there is no answer, please leave a message with your name and phone number and someone will return your call to answer questions or schedule a home inspection.
