Handcuffed man flees police

A Ruston man was arrested last week when he ran from officers attempting to arrest him on an outstanding warrant.

A Ruston Police officer was on patrol early last Wednesday morning when they saw a man asleep on a bench in front of the Lincoln Parish Library. The officer recognized the man as Devasquez M. Payton, 34, who was wanted on a charge of aggravated second degree battery.


Payton was approached and placed under arrest on the warrant. As officers were escorting the handcuffed man to a patrol car, but he started running and was chased a short distance before he was captured.

Payton was taken to the North Louisiana Medical Center emergency room to be checked out before he was taken to the detention center and booked. In addition to the warrant, he was charged with resisting an officer.

Bail was set at $36,000.
