Tech suspends linebacker indefinitely

Linebacker Brevin Randle has been suspended indefinitely for his actions in Friday night’s win over UTEP.

Following his actions on the field during Louisiana Tech’s 24-10 win over UTEP Friday night at the Sun Bowl, Bulldog linebacker Brevin Randle has been suspended indefinitely.

During a play in the second quarter of the win, Randle intentionally stepped on the back of the neck of a UTEP offensive lineman who was lying on the field following the end of a play in which the Bulldogs recovered a fumble.

The action wasn’t seen by the officials thus no flag was thrown and no action was taken during the game. However, CBS Sports camera’s caught the action which was then shared all over social media, causing an outpouring of reaction across the country.

On Saturday afternoon, the Louisiana Tech Strategic Communications Department released an official statement from Director of Athletics Eric Wood.

“Coach Cumbie and I met with Brevin Randle today and informed him that he has been suspended indefinitely as a result of the incident during last night’s game versus UTEP,” said Wood in the statement. “In speaking with Brevin, he acknowledges that his action was wrong and understands the consequence of that action. Our University, athletic department, and football program believe in culture, class, and competitive excellence and in no way was that displayed in that moment.”

On Saturday evening, Tech head coach Sonny Cumbie went to his personal twitter account with his statement.

“I want to apologize to coach Dimel, Steven Hubbard and the UTEP football program on behalf of our team and coaching staff,” said Cumbie. “What happened during the game was far outside the bounds of sportsmanship and competition. We have indefinitely suspended Brevin and will continue to address consequences.”

The Bulldogs will host WKU Thursday at 7 p.m. at Joe Aillet Stadium.
