BATON ROUGE, La. – Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and the Louisiana Division of Archaeology present October 2023 as Louisiana Archaeology Month. For the 35th year, the Louisiana Office of Cultural Development is providing opportunities for everyone in Louisiana to learn more about the archaeology and history of the state and to protect, preserve, and enjoy these important resources of our rich cultural heritage.
“These family-friendly events are designed to give people a glimpse at Louisiana’s archaeological treasures that have historical value but to also hear from leading experts in the field,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “I’m excited about this unique opportunity to bring awareness to our state’s rich and diverse archeological sites that are of interest to our citizens.”
To celebrate Archaeology Month, the Louisiana Division of Archaeology hosts and supports educational events across the state. Test your archaeology knowledge at various trivia locations, join in on programs at local libraries, help screen for artifacts at Poverty Point World Heritage Site, chat with experts in the field discussing archaeological sites across the state, and more. Annually, International Archaeology Day falls within the same month and this year it falls on Saturday, October 21. View this year’s poster focusing on Louisiana shipwrecks and find a Louisiana Archaeology Month event happening near you on the Archaeology Month webpage.
October is not only Louisiana Archaeology month, it is also Atchafalaya Month, Louisiana Folklife Month, and National Arts and Humanities Month, which the Louisiana Division of the Arts celebrates through local programming. With so many opportunities to enjoy Louisiana’s culture, we look forward to celebrating Louisiana’s rich culture with you all month long!
