Cedar Creek’s powerlifting teams had a stellar weekend competing in the Joey Chustz Invitational at Denham Springs High School on Saturday.

Head coach Jacob Angevine’s Lady Cougars captured the team title with all 11 girls earning a spot on the podium against some tough competition. Woodlawn of Baton Rouge was the girls runner-up.

While the Cougars finished as the runner-ups, just one point shy of tying for the overall team title with defending Class 5A state champion St. Paul’s.

“This was a great experience for our kids to get a road trip like that before the state meet,” said Angevine. “Some of our girls started off really shaky on the squat but bounced back on bench and deadlift to have strong finishes. It helps having an experienced and battle-tested group like we do. It was really special to get all of them on the podium.

“Our boys are so scrappy. We were one of the smallest schools there, but our boys were ready to fight. The boys had a late start time and that threw off the warm up times. To have all that adversity and still finish just one point shy to the defending 5A state champions says a lot. I’m so proud of them and this weekend says a lot about our program.”

Seniors Emma Moore and Lauren Enterkin took home both of the Outstanding Lifter trophies, while senior Lawson Lillo finished as the Outstanding Lifter on the light platform.

Moore, Ainsley Riley, Enterkin, Ashlyn Bourn and Avery Bourn all won first place in their respective weight classes on the girls side, while Lillo, Blake Wade and Carter Lewis won first place in their classifications.

The teams will compete this Saturday at North DeSoto High School.
