Girl Scouts learn entrepreneurial skills through cookie season

By Judith Roberts

Move over, Mardi Gras season – it’s cookie season now.

Girl Scouts in Lincoln Parish Ruston–Lincoln Chamber of Commerce earlier this week sold over 1,500 cases of cookies, totaling about 18,800 boxes, which help contribute to local Girl Scout troops.

Will Dearmon, president and CEO of the Chamber, said the Chamber looks forward every year to opening the doors of the Visitor’s Center to the local Girl Scouts as they kickoff the start to their cookie season.

“The mission of the Girl Scouts is to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place,” he said. “The real treat isn’t the cookie sale, though; for local business and Chamber members, this is an opportunity to meet young entrepreneurs who clearly have a passion for service and business and encourage them to continue working hard and being positive lights in our community.”

Daisy Primary Leader of Troop 11 Ashley Turner said this was a great way to kick off the 2024 Girl Scout season.

“The proceeds (benefit) the girls of Lincoln Parish,” Turner said. “Cookie season promotes entrepreneurial skills for our girls such as decision making, team building, money management, customer service and people skills, and goal setting.”

Girl Scouts will be out and about town this weekend in locations such as Walmart, Lowe’s, Super 1 and Five Below working on these skills.

Area active Girl Scout troops are Troops 251, 351, 11 and 12. Those who sold cookies at the Chamber earlier this week were from Troop 11.

“Without a doubt, after meeting the members of Troup No. 11, everyone left this event filled with pride for our community, optimis for the future — and at least one to two boxes each of cookies,” Dearmon said.
