Ruston softball wins six over opening week

By Kyle Roberts

In her second season as head coach of the Ruston High Lady Bearcats, head coach Laura Garvie has already surpassed last season’s win total.

And it only took her five days on the calendar to do it.

“I’m happy with how we performed this week,” Garvie said. “But for us we are also saying every inning and every week has to have renewed energy to go after it so we celebrate our success from the weekend and then get right back in it looking towards the next week.”

Ruston started with an opening day loss at North DeSoto 10-0 after five innings last Tuesday, but would go on to beat Jacksonville 3-2 and Tatum 12-1 on Thursday and then White Oak and Pleasant Grove by finals of 4-3 and 8-1, respectively, on Friday. All four games were played at the Carthage Tournament.

The Lady Bearcats followed with a pair of wins Saturday at the ETX Double Header beating Kilgore 13-3 and Center 14-4 out in Texas.

“We started off with North Desoto, and that’s always going to be tough,” Garvie said. “One thing we have been pushing is that in order to be successful, one-through-nine has to produce. I think we did that this weekend in our tournament and double header.

“We keep saying things like “be disciplined” and “you’re not fast unless you’re on base,” and we are leaning into that. We have potential to have power throughout the whole lineup, but our goal is to hit for first through the whole lineup and that’s something we put on display this week.”

During the span, senior Cala Wilson is batting .611 with a pair of home runs and four more multiple-base hits. Wilson has also pitched 15.1 innings and struck out 17 batters.

The Lady Bearcats will be back in action tonight at Choudrant. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
