A Lincoln Parish student is making a name for herself while making a name for others.
Kaejha Stewart, a sixth-grade student at AE Phillips Laboratory School, recently received third place from the Historic New Orleans Collection’s Writing Contest.
Students had to use their creativity and historical knowledge to invent imaginary identities for New Orleanians whose information and identity were lost. Over 1,000 submissions were received from all 50 states. She placed third in the middle school division and won $150 for her accomplishment.
For her photograph, Stewart imagined the great life that the man in the photograph, Mr. Lou — as she named him — lived and gave him a back story. She aspires to become the author of her own book one day.
Stewart titled her work, “The Man on Magazine Street.” Her entry will soon be published on The Historic New Orleans Collection’s website, alongside all of the other winners.
Stewart is an avid reader and enjoys writing, and her ELA teacher at AEP is Grace Hearn.
