Fleeing motorist heads home

A motorist who initially stopped for a state trooper but then sped away from the traffic stop was apprehended after a lengthy chase that culminated at the suspect’s home last Wednesday.

Randy L. Butler, 62, of Grambling, was charged with multiple drug and traffic offenses after he bailed out of his car upon reaching his home on Stadium Drive.

A trooper with the Louisiana State Police clocked Butler westbound on U.S. 80 at 72 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone. The trooper initiated a stop and Butler pulled off U.S. 80 onto Gahagan Road. According to the trooper’s report, despite numerous directives to step out of the car, Butler instead fled, reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour on Gahagan Road.

Butler turned onto La. Highway 3005, running a stop sign and reaching speeds over 90 mph. He turned east on U.S. 80, again running a stop sign. Turning onto Stadium Drive, the driver bailed out and ran to the back door of his house. He was ordered to stop but refused and a Taser was used to take him into custody.

A bag of suspected marijuana and a pill bottle of suspected methamphetamine apparently abandoned in the yard were recovered.

Butler’s driver’s license was found to be suspended and two arrest warrants from Claiborne Parish were located.

Butler was booked for aggravated flight from an officer, speeding, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, resisting an officer, driving under suspension, and the two Claiborne warrants.

Bail on the Lincoln Parish charges was set at $53,500.
