Taser stops shoplifter running from police

Ruston Police arrested a man last Wednesday after a report of a shoplifter fleeing a Ruston store. Dontrell Williams, 34, of Avondale, La., was arrested about 10 p.m. July 10 on Arizona Avenue.

Police received a report that a man wearing an orange shirt and khaki pants had shoplifted a case of diapers from a local store. He was last seen headed east on E. Arizona Ave. A patrol officer saw a man carrying a box covered in an orange T-shirt. The man fled and was subdued with a Taser. Williams allegedly continued to attempt to escape, and the Taser was deployed again.

Williams was arrested and the box of diapers recovered. Williams was checked out at the Northern Louisiana Medical Center before transport to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.

A smoking pipe commonly used to ingest narcotics was found in Williams’s sock. He was booked for theft by shoplifting, resisting an officer, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail was set at $3,000.
