A Ruston man was arrested Sunday night on DWI and traffic charges after he allegedly struck a utility pole on North Bonner Street.
A Ruston police officer found Antonio Spivey, 46, and his GMC Tahoe in the middle of the roadway on Bonner Street about 8:20 p.m. Sunday night. The vehicle had a large amount of damage to its driver’s side.
When asked what happened, Spivey laughed. He was directed out of the vehicle and the officer observed he was swaying back and forth and having difficulty controlling his balance. A records check showed Spivey did not have a driver’s license and was wanted for failure to appear in Ruston City Court.
It was determined Spivey was traveling north on Bonner Street when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole near Maryland Ave. Spivey seemed unsure that he was involved in a crash, stating he must have blacked out.
A Louisiana state trooper came to the scene and administered field sobriety tests. Spivey then became extremely irate, throwing a tantrum consistent with the use of PCP or synthetic marijuana, according to the trooper’s report.
Spivey was taken to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center and then administered a breath test that showed no alcohol in Spivey’s system. A sample was taken to test Spivey for the presence of drugs.
He was booked for first offense DWI, expired vehicle registration, no driver’s license, careless operation of a vehicle, and a warrant for failure to appear in Ruston City Court on a charge of entering premises after being forbidden. Bail was set at $4,500.
