LAFAYETTE, La. — Ruston High School’s Cheer Squad took first place Sunday at the Universal Cheerleaders’ Association Louisiana Regional Meet in the Medium Varsity Game Day Section.

It was the same event Ruston High won back in its November meet in Texas.

“We are really proud of these girls,” Ruston High Spirit Group Coordinator Collin McDonald said. “They put in a lot of hours the past few weeks doing community events and extra events getting ready for state with football. Then after the game and having a quick turnaround you worry about their focus and energy levels but they took care of business and did what they needed to do to get the win.

“We still have a lot of work to do before February and with basketball season getting into full gear there’s still a lot of things to balance but so far they’ve handled everything we’ve thrown at them.”

The win helped Ruston High receive another bid to the National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Fla., in February. Last year, Ruston High finished second last season.
