Staff report
With the imminent cold snap approaching North Louisiana, Lincoln Parish residents are encouraged to take precautions as temperatures are projected to dip below freezing.
Below are some handy tips for how to protect your house, your family and your neighbors during potentially hazardous temperatures.
Tips to avoid frozen pipes
Prior to the weather system moving in, check sprinklers and irrigation systems outside to make sure everything is turned off and drain properly.
Cold air near water lines can create problems. Protect any outdoor pipes and faucets by wrapping them with proper insulation.
Make sure to address any drafts around windows and doors, and identify any potential freezing points within your house.
As the cold weather sets in, make sure to keep cabinet doors and vanities open to let warm room temperature in to the water pipes beneath. Ensure there is a small trickle of water running in a couple of faucets around the house to ensure water is moving through your pipes.
If your pipes freeze
Shut off your water immediately if you have frozen pipes. You can thaw pipes with warm air from a hair dryer or space heater. Do not use kerosene heaters or open flames.
Please exercise caution is you attempt to turn your water back on. Once you have thawed your pipes, turn the water back on slowly and check the pipes and joints for any cracks or breaks.
Winter weather planning
Prior to the cold weather, make sure you have emergency supplies for both your home and your car. Fuel your vehicle ahead of time if you are able. Be sure to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace the batteries as needed.
Be sure to sign up for any warning system (Lincoln Parish has LincAlerts by clicking here) so you can remain updated during the weather event.
As you can, bring any outdoor pets and plants inside to avoid the harshness of the cold.
During the icy weather, be sure to check in on neighbors and family members. In the case of a power outage, be sure to keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home to avoid any issues with vapors.
