Vehicle burglaries still plague Ruston

Vehicle burglaries continue to be one of the most prevalent crimes in Ruston. And police say it is one of the most preventable.

Social media posts indicate thefts from cars has continued even after Ruston Police made several arrests some months ago. And police acknowledge the thefts have continued and have affected all parts of the city.

Police Chief Steve Rogers recently told KNOE News that whether a theft occurs depends on what robbers can see through the windows.

Rogers told KNOE, “The odd thing is and what we’re seeing is the amount of valuables that are left in the vehicles, besides the fact that we’ve had, I think, six or seven vehicles stolen because people left their keys in the vehicle.”

Deputy Chief Chad Hamlin told the Lincoln Parish Journal earlier this month that the thefts have been occurring all over Ruston and can’t be pinned down to a few neighborhoods.

Among the items commonly stolen are electronics, firearms, and cash.

Authorities urge motorists to lock up their vehicles with the valuables removed. Rogers said he locks his truck even when it is behind a closed garage door. “Make it as hard as possible for [the thieves],” he said.
