The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has announced a $17.9 million project to repair over nine miles of I-20 in Lincoln Parish. Work on the project, which stretches from the Bienville Parish line to the La. Highway 149 overpass near Grambling, is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 31.
Local motorists have complained for several years about the condition of Interstate 20 in the targeted area.
On March 31, westbound I-20 will experience an outside lane closure from the Bienville Parish line to Exit 78 (Industry/LA 563).
On Tuesday, April 1, eastbound I-20 will have a lane closure in the same area. These lane closures are necessary to allow for underdrain work and improvements. Following these initial lane closures, motorists should expect ongoing intermittent lane closures in both directions to allow for construction work to progress safely and efficiently.
Drivers should anticipate some delays, particularly during peak travel times. The overall project involves roadway grading, drainage improvements, full-depth repairs to address the roadway base, milling to remove the old asphalt, and application of new asphalt to repair the driving surface as well as the subsurface layers.
The old asphalt on the ramps at the La. 507 and La. 563 interchanges will also be removed and replaced. Because this project is taking place on an interstate with high traffic volumes, a queue detection system is being implemented to inform motorists in real-time of changing traffic conditions on the roadway. This queue detection system involves the use of portable digital message boards placed at strategic points ahead of the work zone that display messages based on the current travel conditions, such as prompting motorists to use an alternate route or expect delays.
Emergency vehicles will have access during construction, but may encounter some travel delays, and should consider mapping out alternative routes.
The entire project is anticipated to conclude in Summer 2026, with progress dependent on weather conditions and other factors that impact construction timelines. DOTD said investing in roadway improvements like this is a crucial aspect of fostering economic development and enhancing the driving experience for both residents and visitors.
