A viewing for Mr. Robert Rue Raney, age 81, of Youngstown, Florida, was held on Thursday, May 1st from 3:00–4:00 p.m. at Owens Memorial Chapel, 2300 West California Avenue, Ruston, Louisiana.
Robert passed away peacefully on Monday, April 28, 2025, in Ruston, Louisiana. He was born on March 3, 1944, in Alexandria, Louisiana, and lived a life marked by service, curiosity, and quiet strength.
He honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1962 to 1982. As a Radar Specialist, he played a critical role during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War, working across multiple air defense systems. He later served as a Drill Sergeant and concluded his military career as a Master Sergeant and Recruiter.
Following his military service, Robert pursued a wide range of occupations, including private detective, bar owner, HVAC manufacturing technician, and co-owner of a candy store—embodying an entrepreneurial spirit and a love for reinvention.
Robert was known for his dry wit, independent thinking, and love of movies. He was a passionate gemologist, often venturing into the natural world in search of rare and beautiful stones. These “little beauties,” once discovered, were lovingly transformed by his wife into wearable works of art. He delighted in exploring backroads with his wife and their dog, savoring the joy of simple discovery.
Robert shared nearly 32 years of marriage with his devoted wife, Bonnie Raney. Their enduring partnership was built on love, resilience, and mutual respect. They would have celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary in November 2025.
He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Raney; his children, Edward Raney, Robert Raney, Rhonda Raney, and Mary Elizabeth Raney; and a circle of extended family and friends who will remember him with affection and admiration.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Robert’s memory. To leave an online condolence or tribute, please visit www.owensmemorialfuneralhome.com.
