Ruston traffic stop yields various drugs

A traffic stop in Ruston last week led to the recovery of several types of drugs and the arrest of a local man.

Chauncey Harper, 20, was stopped on April 22 at about 2 p.m. when an Ruston police officer saw several traffic violations. During the course of the stop, the officer found a variety of drugs and paraphernalia in the car.

Harper was a passenger in a sedan with a broken tail light on South Farmerville Street when the driver made a turn without the use of a turn signal because of the defective tail light. When the officer approached the car, the odor of unburnt marijuana was detected.


The officer saw a backpack on the rear seat that had a side pocket overflowing with plastic sandwich bags commonly used a package drugs.

The officer saw a large bulge in Harper‘s pocket. When Harper was asked what he had, he hesitated in answering. Approximately 34 grams of marijuana in a plastic sandwich bag along with over $5,000 in cash were found in Harper‘s pocket.

A search of the vehicle located oxycodone and acetaminophen in the form of Percocet, a second type of oxycodone and acetaminophen, acetaminophen and hydrocodone, alprazolam in the form of Xanax, and another form of oxycodone and acetaminophen.

Harper was arrested and booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for possession of a Schedule I controlled substance with intent to distribute, four counts of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, and no turn signal.
