The Louisiana Tech Strategic Communications department picked up six awards in the 2025 Louisiana Sports Writers Association state SID contest, as announced Sunday at the awards luncheon in Natchitoches.

The six awards, second most of any institution, were in several categories including release/feature story, game notes, graphics, photography, and radio play-by-play. This marked the 14th straight year LA Tech has earned at least five awards, bringing the department’s overall total to 129 awards in the state contest over the past 20+ years.

“This collection of awards is a testament to the incredible talent and teamwork across our entire communications department,” said Associate AD for Strategic Communications Kane McGuire.

In the Division V (Game Notes) category, McGuire claimed first place for his Bulldog Basketball game notes against UTEP.

“The best game notes are those that are clean and clear, allowing a member of the media to quickly find what they need, especially when doing a broadcast,” said the judges. “The front page has all of that, while maintaining a good font size late in the season. The Bulldog Storylines and Projected Starters are a nice touch, while immediately jumping into the roster on page 2. The Fun Facts of The Game for each game is a nice touch – just a quick bullet that could be referenced from that game if a media member needed something in a pinch. The Fresh Uniforms note is creative as well.

“Once you get deeper into the notes, there is plenty of great information that could be used for the media member who is either seeing the team for the first time or wanting to do a deeper dive.

McGuire also placed second in the Division II Release/Feature (Men’s Basketball/Baseball) category for his feature on Bulldog point guard Sean Newman Jr. This brings his career total to 22 awards in 13 years with the department, including 10 in the release/feature story category.

Courtney Pugh of Donnie Bell Design took first place for a third consecutive year (fourth overall) in the Division VII (College Graphics) category. The first-place graphic depicted former Bulldog Baseball picture Cade Gibson getting called up to the major leagues.

“Another poster-quality graphic that all youngsters should hang in their room,” said the judges.

Josh McDaniel‘s photo of Jake Smith sliding into home plate as the Bulldogs walked it off in the ninth inning placed second in the Division VIII (Best College Photo) category.

Meanwhile, Kyle Roberts placed third in the Division VI (College Radio Play-by-Play) category for his call of the Lady Techsters stunning the Lady Flames with an electric fourth quarter comeback.

The sixth award claimed by LA Tech was Stephen Featherston earning Honorable Mention in the Division V (Game Notes) category.
