Odds and ends from around the parish

by Wesley Harris

Just over a year ago, Ruston broke ground for a new fire station to replace the aging Fire Station No. 2 on West California Avenue. The new facility is nearing completion just a mile to the west of the current station. When first built in 1949 to house a single fire truck, Station No. 2 was considered on the outskirts of town. Its small size limits the type of fire engines that can be housed there.

If you’ve ever sat at the stop sign at the South Service Road and Cooktown Road and felt entering the intersection placed your life in jeopardy, you will soon have another option. The City of Ruston has received over a million dollars in funding to extend Goyne Street from West Alabama Avenue to the Service Road. Currently, Goyne is just a short stub of a street, literally a road to nowhere.

The local Veterans of Foreign Wars post literally fell apart a few years ago when the foundation crumbled to the point it became a safety hazard. The post now has a fine new building on Memorial Drive near the original post location. The area known as Memorial Park once contained Ruston’s first public baseball field and first public pool. In addition to the VFW post, it now includes the Boys & Girls Club and the city’s military museum. A skate park is in the works at the old pool location.
