Oscar Smith picked up more hardware on Wednesday, as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association named him the Louisiana Newcomer of the Year.
In addition, fourteen other Bulldogs earned a spot on the All-Louisiana Teams.
The superlative awards were determined by a vote of the state’s media members and the sports information directors from each school. For All-Louisiana honors, the team was selected based on athletes who achieved one of the top three performances statewide in each event during the season.
Smith became the first Bulldog since 2016 to earn Second Team All-American honors by finishing 10th in the 110m hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a time of 13.45. He also set program records in the 60m and 110m hurdles and was named both LSWA and CUSA Newcomer of the Year.
The Bulldogs finished with two first team members: Kimeone McLeod and Donald Lamp. At the Arkansas Spring Invitational, McLeod ran a time of 13.35 in the 110m hurdles. Meanwhile, Lamp broke the school record in the hammer throw for the fourth time at the CUSA Championships, reaching a distance of 203-6.
A’reil Williams was the lone second team member. The high jumper cleared 5-9.25 at the Florida Relays and qualified for her second straight NCAA Regional.
The remaining six third team selections were split evenly between the field and running events.
Sabastian Bradley-Reed secured two selections-one individually in the 400m (45.88, CUSA Championship) and another as part of the 4×400 relay team that included Tim Rummelhagen, Cullen Hronek and Valentino Rudolph. Together, they posted a winning time of 3:05.77 for a fourth consecutive CUSA Championship.
Jamara Patterson, Osaretin Joy Usenbor, Nia Wiley and Tyhra Charles set the CUSA Championship record with a time of 3:33.60.
Two javelin throwers, Zachary Drake (209-2, Clyde Hart Classic) and Maria Ferreiro Pena (152-4, Clyde Hart), earned Third Team honors for the Bulldogs. Rounding out the All-Louisiana accolades, Demarko Lawler notched a distance of 50-1.75 in the triple jump at the CUSA Championships.
