Students charged in Ouachita Parish school incidents

Juveniles were taken into custody at two Ouachita Parish schools last Thursday.

Deputies from the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to separate incidents at the West Ouachita High School and East Ouachita Middle School on Sept. 11.

According to OPSO, what claimed to be a joke by 16-year-old female led to her arrest. The girl allegedly said she would “shoot up West Ouachita High School starting with her ex-boyfriend.” She was taken in the custody and transported to the Green Oaks Juvenile Detention Center in Monroe on one count of terrorizing.

In a separate incident, while cheerleaders were practicing in the library at East Ouachita Middle School, two 13-year-old girls found a firearm in a drawer of a sewing desk. The gun was removed from the drawer to “play” with it. The firearm discharged, causing injury to another female’s foot.

Surveillance video confirmed the firearm was found in the drawer. OPSO investigators are continuing to review video to determine how the weapon was brought into school property and placed in the drawer.

The two 13-year-olds were taken into custody and charged with negligent injuring.

OPSO said that out of an abundance of caution, extra deputies were at both schools on Friday. Both incidents are still under investigation.
