Police arrested two men carrying firearms on the Grambling State University over the Homecoming weekend as other universities experienced shootings during similar festivities.
A string of shootings on university and high school campuses had law enforcement on high alert across the South this weekend. A woman was killed and two others are injured in a shooting at Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi, Saturday evening.
A child was struck by gunfire near the tailgate section during Jackson State’s homecoming festivities Saturday.
Shortly before Saturday’s LSU-South Carolina kickoff, a shooting incident occurred just outside Tiger Stadium. According to LSU Police, witnesses saw the man adjusting his pants when he accidentally shot himself, discarded his pistol, and sought aid.

LSU Police were dispatched to another shooting at LSU’s north gates about 8:30 p.m. Two men opened fire, wounding two other men.
The man who accidentally shot himself was arrested for having a gun on campus but no arrests had been made in the other cases at last check.
The two men arrested at Grambling this weekend join a number of students and non-students alike who have been arrested on campus this semester.
Kamauri Deshon Fleming, 19, of Shreveport, was arrested by Friday night after a GSU officer noticed what appeared to be a gun magazine protruding from his backpack.
Fleming is not a GSU student, according to the arresting officer’s report.
About 10 p.m. Friday the officer was patrolling near the GSU assembly center when he saw three men walking through the area. They told police they were not students but were on campus visiting a cousin.
Fleming was wearing a backpack with what looked like a gun magazine sticking out of it, the officer’s report said. Fleming admitted he was armed.
A search of Fleming’s backpack yielded two handguns, several plastic bags, and 13 resealable bags of suspected marijuana.
The amount of marijuana recovered from Fleming was 147.9 grams, according to a report. Fleming claimed ownership of the contraband, the report said.
Fleming was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, violation of the controlled substances act–drug free zone, possession of a firearm in a school zone, and possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
Shamarr Darnell Cato-Sagura, 21, was arrested early Sunday morning when a bulge in his waistband was spotted by a GSU officer.
An officer parked at the GSU student union saw Cato-Sagura walk by with a bulge in his front waistband. Cato-Sagura reportedly told the officer he had a gun and was carrying it for protection. He was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for possession of a firearm in a school zone. Bail was set at $20,000.
