GSU officer sees drug deal in dorm parking lot, arrests man

A Ruston man was arrested after a Grambling State University officer observed an apparent drug transaction in a dormitory parking lot.

Bernard Johnson, III, 21, was arrested at about 9:30 p.m. on Halloween after an officer on patrol allegedly saw him hand a small bag of suspected drugs to a woman who walked up to the driver’s window.

In a report, the officer said he was patrolling near Pinchback Hall when a Chrysler 300 pulled into the parking lot. The officer then saw a hand-to-hand transaction with a woman who walked up to the car and retrieved a small baggie.

When the officer approached the car, the woman walked away quickly into Bethune Hall. The driver was questioned after he parked the vehicle. When asked what he had handed the woman, he said a “Trey 5, 3.5 grams of marijuana.”

When asked if he had any more marijuana inside the vehicle, he handed over a clear plastic bag containing about 24 grams of suspected marijuana from the middle console.

Johnson claimed ownership of the marijuana and admitted he had sold 3.5 grams to the woman. A digital scale found in the vehicle was also seized.

A detective located the woman inside Bethune Hall and interviewed her. She admitted to purchasing a Trey 5 from Johnson in the parking lot.

Johnson was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, violation of the controlled substances law related to drug free zones, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
