Odds & ends from around Lincoln Parish

At least two of the power outages in Ruston Saturday were due to motorists losing control of their vehicles and striking utility poles. Is it worth it to get out on the roads in such conditions?

Kudos to city officials for draining the Railroad Park fountain before the ice storm hit. After losing the original 1890s fountain to a hard freeze several years ago, protecting the exact replica fountain installed last year was a priority in storm preparation.

Don’t hesitate to visit one of our many restaurants once conditions permit. A closure of two or three days can be devastating to a small business and to the employees who rely on those jobs and your tips.

Saw more grown men than kids out playing on the snow and ice Sunday afternoon. No interest in the playoff games apparently.

The numerous text alerts and social media messages from Ruston and Lincoln Parish officials went a long way in keeping the public informed about road conditions and power outages. Thank you!

When you see our police officers, utility and highway workers, firefighters, and deputy sheriffs, thank them for the hard work in difficult conditions over the past days. And it’s not over, yet.

Lincoln Parish was very fortunate as far as maintaining power through the ice storm. About 600 customers lost power compared to about 6,000 in Jackson Parish and 49,000 in Ouachita. About 152,000 homes and businesses had lost power as of Sunday afternoon.
