BATON ROUGE — The Ruston High School girls tennis team brought home a championship trophy this past weekend after sweeping its division at an invitational tournament in Baton Rouge.

Ruston was the only public school in the field and the only team to use the same six players in both singles and doubles. Bess Black, Lillian Fendley, Aubrie Huneycutt, Alyssa Langiulli, Libby Morgan and Maggie Rogers represented the Bearcats.

Black, Fendley, Huneycutt and Morgan each swept their singles matches. In doubles play, the teams of Fendley and Black, along with Huneycutt and Morgan, also swept their matches.

Overall, Ruston won 31 of its 36 combined singles and doubles matches.

Coach David Poe said the performance reflected the team’s toughness and composure in an unfamiliar setting.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my girls,” Poe said. “They showed up to a tournament as an outsider. I asked them to give me everything they had and they did.”

Poe said Ruston made a strong impression against a field that did not know much about the program before the tournament began.

“Most of the teams had no clue who we were,” Poe said. “They all knew our name after we were handed the trophy. These girls represented Ruston well.”
