Ruston Police arrested a local man for battery of a dating partner after responding to a residence to investigate a disturbance.
Jaylan Payton, 24, of Ruston, was arrested on April 14 at about 8:00 a.m. after a preliminary investigation.
Officers arrived at a West Line Avenue residence where they found a woman who appeared upset. She was disheveled and partially dressed. Payton told police, “Me and my girl just got into it.” He stated he and the woman were going through each other’s phones when he saw text messages of a sexual nature between the woman and another man.

According to an officer’s report, Payton said he started striking the woman with an open hand, and he continued striking her on the side of her face, causing some swelling.
Payton said the physical altercation continued into the bathroom where he and the woman were pushing each other around.
Payton was arrested and taken to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center, where he was booked.
