Grambling State men’s basketball head coach Patrick Crarey II announced the addition of Tyrone Levett to the staff as an assistant coach.
Levett, a graduate of Alabama State University, comes to GSU after serving as an assistant coach for the Hornets men’s basketball program, bringing a rare combination of elite playing experience, player development expertise and deep institutional ties.
Levett has been a key figure on the Alabama State staff since 2018, contributing in multiple roles, including assistant coach, director of player development and director of basketball operations. In those capacities, he oversaw frontcourt and wing development, implemented individualized training programs and played an integral role in recruiting, scouting and game preparation.
His responsibilities extended to managing day-to-day program operations, including scheduling, travel coordination, compliance and camp organization. Known for his emphasis on fundamentals, Levett built a structured development system centered on rebounding, free-throw efficiency, film study and overall player accountability.
Levett is the only player to win a SWAC Tournament championship as both a player and coach at Alabama State, helping guide ASU to a SWAC championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2025.
Levett assisted in ASU’s second First Four appearance and helped the program earn its first NCAA Tournament victory with a dramatic 70-68 buzzer-beater over Saint Francis University. Amar Knox and TJ Madlock earned first- and second-team All-SWAC honors, respectively, along with HBCU All-American recognition.
A former standout student-athlete at Alabama State from 1998-2002, Levett remains one of the most accomplished players in program history. He is the school’s all-time leading rebounder with 944 boards and ranks fifth in career scoring with 1,552 points while also sitting third in free throws made with 477. As a cornerstone of the Hornets’ 2000-01 team, he helped lead Alabama State to both the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships, securing the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance. His individual accolades include All-SWAC honors, SWAC All-Tournament recognition and HBCU All-American distinction.
Following his collegiate career, Levett spent more than 15 years playing professionally both domestically and internationally. His career included opportunities with NBA organizations such as the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons and Utah Jazz in workout and summer league settings, along with extensive overseas experience in Sweden, Austria, Portugal, Japan, Ireland and Canada. He earned ABA championship honors with the Vermont Frost Heaves in 2007 and was named an NBL Canada All-Star in 2012, establishing himself as a respected veteran and leader across multiple leagues.
Levett’s professional journey has directly informed his coaching philosophy, particularly in preparing student-athletes for opportunities beyond the collegiate level. His global experience and high basketball IQ provide valuable perspective in mentoring players and expanding recruiting pipelines, including international prospects.
In addition to his on-court responsibilities, Levett is actively engaged in community outreach, organizing youth clinics and strengthening grassroots connections throughout the region. His ability to connect with alumni, donors and recruits makes him a valuable ambassador for the program.
Levett earned both his bachelor’s degree as a student-athlete and a master’s degree in 2025 from Alabama State, underscoring his commitment to academic and personal development.
