Ruston woman arrested on DWI, drug charges following stop

A Ruston woman was arrested early Saturday morning following a traffic stop on Tech Drive, according to the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Ashanti Watson, 23, was arrested around 2:29 a.m. May 16 after deputies observed a Jeep Compass traveling southbound without headlights on Tech Drive near Bearcat Drive.

According to the affidavit, deputies activated emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop. Watson exited the vehicle and walked toward deputies. The report states Watson was unsteady while walking and told deputies there “might be two grams of weed” inside the vehicle.

Deputies attempted to conduct standardized field sobriety tests, but the report states Watson was unable to complete the testing. During the encounter, Watson allegedly asked deputies, “Are you for real? I’m drunk.”

A search of the vehicle reportedly produced a glass jar containing suspected marijuana and three packs of rolling papers. Deputies also located three open bottles of tequila inside the vehicle.

According to the affidavit, when deputies opened the patrol vehicle door to speak with Watson, she immediately attempted to exit the vehicle and advised she needed to use the restroom.

Watson was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, open container, and resisting an officer.
