Man arrested on DWI, marijuana charges

Ruston Police arrested a man last week for DWI and drug possession following a traffic stop in Ruston, according to a Ruston Police Department report.

Robby Smith, 40, of Tallulah, was arrested at about 1:24 a.m. on May 30 on Vaughn Avenue in Ruston.

According to the report, officers saw a red 2008 Ford Explorer traveling south on South Farmerville Street. The vehicle crossed the center line into the northbound lane. Officers followed the vehicle and observed it turn onto East Vaughn Avenue and continue across U.S. 167 onto West Vaughn Avenue.

The report states officers observed the vehicle crossing the center yellow line and touching the fog line multiple times. During the traffic stop, Smith reportedly refused to provide his driver’s license.

Officers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Smith’s breath and found his speech was slurred and that he swayed while standing. A baggie of marijuana was found in the driver’s door of the vehicle.

Smith refused to perform standardized field sobriety tests. He was advised of his rights and placed under arrest.

Smith was given the opportunity to provide a breath sample for analysis. However, Smith did not give a sufficient sample for a complete test. He was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for DWI, improper lane usage, and possession of marijuana.
