A Shreveport police officer was shot early Sunday morning after encountering an armed man at a disturbance call.
At about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, a police officer assigned to the Downtown Unit responded to a report of a fight in the alley behind the Sand Bar in the 400 block of Spring Street, according to the Shreveport Police Department.
The officer arrived quickly and attempted to stop the disturbance. While intervening, the officer became involved in a struggle with one of the individuals. During that struggle, the suspect produced a handgun and shot the officer.
Despite being injured, the officer immediately returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times and ending the threat, SPD said.
Both the officer and the suspect were transported to a local hospital. The unnamed officer is expected to recover from his injuries. The suspect was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The Shreveport Police Department said its Real Time Crime Center camera system captured the incident.
Following standard protocol in SPD officer-involved shootings, the Louisiana State Police (LSP) has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
In a press release, LSP said, “The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and no other officers were harmed during the incident. This is an active investigation; further information will be released when it becomes available.”
Anyone with information, photos, or video is urged to share the information with LSP detectives. You may anonymously report information through the Louisiana State Police online reporting system by visiting lsp.org and clicking on Report Suspicious or Criminal Activity, or by calling the LSP Fusion Center Hotline at 1-800-434-8007.
In a written statement, SPD said, “Our officers willingly place themselves in harm’s way every day to protect this community. This morning, one of our own was shot while attempting to stop violence and keep others safe. We are grateful our officer is alive, and we ask the community to keep the officer, the officer’s family, and our department in their thoughts as the investigation moves forward.”
