COLUMN: How’s your standard of living?

When many hear the term standard of living, they automatically think of their material wealth, comfort, and opportunity for a high quality of life.  I get that definition, but that’s not the standard of living I’m referring to here.

I’m referring to the true standards of living.  The standards that provide a fulfilling life beyond making a living.  The standards that provide direction for your life beyond where popular opinion would lead you.  The standards that guide your thinking and decision making beyond societal influences of the day.

Romans 12:2 tells us not to be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.

When you consider the standard of living that I am referring to in this article, consider the key words – conformed and transformed – as we evaluate your standard of living with the following questions.

  • Do you conform to the world by comparing your life to others, or are you transformed by pursuing your unique identity and interests?
  • Do you conform to the world by pursuing society’s definition of success, or are you transformed by elevating the importance of impact beyond income and purpose beyond profit?
  • Do you conform to the world by pursuing a self-focused priority, or are you transformed by elevating the needs of others?
  • Do you conform to the world by being consumed with prominence, power, and appearance, or are you transformed through your humility, poise, and service?

The typical definition of standard of living deals almost exclusively with outcomes and achievements.  My reference to your standard of living has more to do with the inputs of life, fulfillment, and joy.

The typical definition directs you to pursue comfort, opulence, and wealth as a priority.  My reference prioritizes contentment, meaningful experiences, and consistency of character.

The typical definition has a focus on bettering the future while my reference is focused on making the most of the present.

There is nothing wrong with a healthy, balanced focus on improving your typical definition of your standard of living.  However, my reference to your authentic standard of living will be the most meaningful pursuit that you could choose.

Romans 12:2 tells us that transforming starts with our thinking.  Thoughts that dwell on comparisons, social media posts the lower our self-view, and unrealistic expectations lead to conformity with the world.  Turning and renewing our thinking to focus on who you are becoming not what you are achieving results in a very different life

How are you evaluating your standard of living?

A more fulfilling life could be one choice away.  It all starts with your thinking.  You become what you dwell on.

Is it time to start thinking differently?  Your standard of living depends on it!
