Grambling State women’s volleyball assistant coach Daniel Cabrera has been elevated to head coach of the program.
His promotion comes just after head coach Paige Phillips stepped down to spend more time with her family.
“We are grateful to Coach Paige Phillips for her dedication and leadership of our volleyball program,” said Grambling State Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Trayvean Scott. “She has made a positive impact on our student-athletes and represented Grambling State with professionalism and integrity. We thank Paige for her commitment to our university and wish her continued success in the next chapter of her career.”
Cabrera joined the GSU staff in 2025 as assistant coach after serving as the women’s volleyball head coach at the University of Louisiana Monroe. Prior to ULM, Cabrera served as head coach for both the men’s and women’s programs at Olivet Nazarene University.
In 2020, he led the women’s team to a 20-2 record, a conference title and a national tournament berth, earning Chicagoland Coach of the Year honors.
He also launched the ONU men’s team, which reached a national top-20 ranking and finished as NCCAA runner-up in 2022.
Cabrera’s resume includes stops at Culver-Stockton College, work under Olympian Caren Kemner and coaching for USA Volleyball’s Iowa High Performance program.
As a player, he competed at Hannibal-LaGrange and played professionally for the Great Lakes Lightning. A Chicago native, he starred at Saint Patrick High School, leading his team to a top-50 national ranking.

We are confident he will build on the foundation that has been established and continue moving Grambling State Volleyball forward.”
