A speeding stop on West California Avenue ended with a Ruston woman accused of slipping out of her handcuffs in the back of a patrol unit, police said.
Jermaya Coleman, 22, of Ruston, was arrested Aug. 4 by the Ruston Police Department.
According to an arrest affidavit, an officer stopped a vehicle traveling 53 mph in a 35 mph zone on West California Avenue at 3:24 p.m. The driver, identified as Coleman, did not have her driver’s license, and the officer reported detecting a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.
Coleman stood outside her vehicle while the officer wrote her citation and refused instructions to get back inside, the officer wrote. The officer requested additional units, and dispatch advised that Coleman had an active failure-to-appear warrant for speeding.
After two other officers arrived, Coleman was issued a speeding citation and told she was under arrest on the warrant. She was advised of her rights, placed in restraints and placed in the back of a marked patrol unit. While officers searched her vehicle and recovered about 12 grams of marijuana, Coleman had slipped out of her restraints.
She was transported to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center and booked on the failure-to-appear warrant, simple escape and simple possession of marijuana.
