Man jailed after traffic stop on campus turns up marijuana

A Winnfield man was arrested Aug. 12 after a Grambling police officer found more than 50 grams of marijuana during a traffic stop on the Grambling State University campus, according to the affidavit.

Xazavier Zaccheus Calahan, 22, was booked into the Lincoln Parish Detention Center on charges of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, violation of the Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substance Law in a drug-free zone and improper equipment required on vehicles.

A Grambling Police Department sergeant was monitoring traffic at Central Avenue and Main Street at 6:58 p.m. when he saw a white Honda Accord traveling east on Central Avenue with an unreadable temporary tag. He initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver as Calahan, who provided a driver’s license but could not produce insurance or registration. Calahan said he was driving his girlfriend’s car.

The sergeant detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and conducted a probable cause search. The search turned up several individual baggies of a green leafy substance scattered throughout the car, with a total weight of 51.8 grams — an amount the sergeant determined was significantly more than would be used for personal consumption, indicating distribution.

Calahan was placed in restraints and taken to the Grambling Police Department for processing before being transported to the detention center.
