A Ruston man was arrested after a Saturday evening shooting left a 27-year-old man critically injured, according to the Ruston Police Department.
Lt. Kayla Loyd, Ruston Police spokesperson, said officers were dispatched to the 500 block of West Line Avenue at about 7:08 p.m. Saturday, August 15, after receiving a report of a gunshot victim.
Officers found K’Hyri Harris, 27, of Patterson, on Line Avenue suffering from gunshot wounds. Harris was transported directly to St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe with critical injuries, Loyd said.
As of Monday afternoon, Harris is reported to be in stable condition.
At about the same time, dispatchers received calls reporting an argument and gunshots inside an apartment at The Annex Apartments at 509 West Line. Responding officers found evidence that a shooting had occurred inside the residence.
After securing the apartment, investigators obtained a search warrant and recovered a large quantity of suspected illegal narcotics and a firearm, according to Loyd.
During the investigation, police identified Jacobie Zarkiethan Phillips, 25, of 509 West Line, Ruston, as the alleged shooter. Loyd said Phillips told investigators he acted in self-defense and later admitted throwing a firearm into a wooded area.
Officers recovered the second firearm and determined it was equipped with a conversion device capable of making the weapon fully automatic.
The Annex is located behind Ruston’s Neighborhood Walmart about two blocks from the Louisiana Tech campus.
Phillips was booked into the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for possession of a machine gun and felony obstruction of justice.
The investigation remains active, and additional charges may be filed, Loyd said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Ruston Police Department at 318-255-4141.
