GRAMBLING — Grambling State bounced back from a rough opening set to win three straight Wednesday evening, defeating Nicholls 3-1 at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
The Tigers dropped the opening set 25-14 before responding with wins of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-19 to improve to 2-2. Nicholls fell to 2-2.
Lyric Jordan led Grambling State with 12 kills on 34 attacks, hitting .324 while adding an ace, a solo block and four digs.
Amaris Marks added eight kills while hitting .353, and Rihianna Brown was efficient with four kills on six attacks without an error for a .667 hitting percentage.
After struggling offensively in the opening set, Grambling State found its rhythm over the final three. The Tigers hit .333 in the third set before closing out the match with a .444 hitting percentage in the fourth, recording 13 kills and just one error on 27 attacks.
Alayna Howard led Grambling State with 18 assists and added six digs and an ace, while Reece Cook finished with 14 assists and a match-high four service aces.
Hailey Botello paced the Tigers defensively with 10 digs, while Asialin Powell added eight. Grambling State finished with nine service aces, including three from Avri Solik-Fifarek, and totaled 11 blocks.
Nicholls’ Kera Arrington led all players with 16 kills, while Mckenzie Mitchell had 11 and Maya Schirmer added nine. The Colonels finished with 49 kills compared with 37 for Grambling State, but committed 32 attack errors.
Grambling State travels to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to face Alabama on Monday, Sept. 7. First serve is set for 5 p.m. at Foster Auditorium. The match will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
