Houston Christian struck for four goals in the opening 28 minutes, and Grambling State’s second-half comeback bid wasn’t enough as the Lady Tigers fell 4-2 Thursday evening at the Ruston Sports Complex.
After trailing 4-0 at halftime, Grambling State scored twice in an eight-minute span in the second half to cut the deficit in half but could get no closer.
The Lady Tigers dropped to 1-3-1, while Houston Christian improved to 2-3-1.
Mikaela Valentine started the Huskies’ early scoring surge with a goal in the 10th minute before Madison Stormberg struck twice in a three-minute span to make it 3-0.
Olivia Rossman added a goal in the 28th minute to send Houston Christian into halftime with a 4-0 advantage.
Grambling State responded after the break.
Cariana Pou put the Lady Tigers on the board in the 64th minute off an assist from Pearl Wicks, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
Nyla Dore-Anderson made it 4-2 eight minutes later, scoring her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The unassisted goal gave the Lady Tigers life, but the Huskies held GSU scoreless over the final 18 minutes.
Dore-Anderson led Grambling State with three shots, including two on goal, while Layla Jackson put both of her attempts on frame.
GSU goalkeeper Alina Arneth played all 90 minutes and recorded one save.
Houston Christian held a 10-8 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Stormberg led the Huskies with two goals, while Rossman finished with a goal and two assists.
Grambling State returns to action Sunday when it hosts McNeese State at the Ruston Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for noon.
