A Grambling man gave officers a false name after the car he was riding in crashed into a Ruston Police Department patrol unit. He was arrested on three outstanding warrants and later accused of bringing suspected crack cocaine into the parish jail, according to an arrest affidavit.
Chase Maryland, 20, was arrested by Ruston police at 4:33 a.m. Sept. 19.
Officers were called to Apple Street at South Farmerville Street about a fight. When they arrived, they found five people sitting in a vehicle that had crashed into a marked Ruston police unit.
Maryland was sitting behind the front passenger seat and told an officer his name was Marcus Howard. The officer tried to find a photo of Howard but could not confirm who he was. Maryland was detained and placed in the back of a patrol unit.
After some time, the officer asked again for his real name, and Maryland gave it. Dispatch said he had several outstanding warrants.
Maryland was taken to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center and booked on the warrants and a charge of resisting an officer. During booking, deputies found a small white baggie holding a white powdery substance that looked like crack cocaine. He was also charged with introduction of contraband into a penal facility.
The warrants include a Ruston City Court bench warrant with a $2,000 bond, a Ruston Police Department warrant with a $1,000 bond and a 3rd Judicial District Court warrant with a $150,000 bond. Bond on the resisting charge was set at $1,000.
