Louisiana Tech University and its Sigma Nu chapter both issued statements condemning a video circulating on social media that contains racist language.
The video is shot in what appears to be in a parking lot while racist language can be heard playing through a loud speaker.
The Eta Zeta Chapter of Sigma Nu said the incident happened after midnight Sunday morning at its chapter house and that the video contains “extremely offensive, racist language.”
“It is repugnant, unacceptable, and completely contrary to the values and standards of Sigma Nu,” the chapter said in its statement.
The chapter apologized both to those who heard the language in person and to those who have seen it online since.
“We apologize to all who heard the language that night and on social media since then, and we apologize to Louisiana Tech University for the harm and offense caused,” the statement read.
The chapter said it is investigating the incident and “will cooperate fully with the University in this matter.”
Louisiana Tech said in its own statement that the video “contains repugnant language and depicts behavior intolerable in society whether in a public square or a college campus.”
The university said speech of that kind can cross into harassment.
“Severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive speech targeting individuals that interferes with their work or education is discriminatory harassment and will not be tolerated,” the university said.
Louisiana Tech said it will investigate the incident “fully and swiftly.”
“Those found responsible will be held accountable,” the statement read.
Neither statement identified the people in the video or said how many were involved.
