For as long as I can remember, I’ve been going door to door selling things. As a small child, my three older brothers had me sell their allotted items for them. I would sell anything: light bulbs, golf balls, magazine and newspaper subscriptions, and more. I was very young — and maybe even cute. I enjoyed meeting people and talking with them. I’m still not afraid to knock on a stranger’s door.
These past couple of weeks, I’ve been going door to door to talk to the residents of Ward 5. I drop off my “door hanger” so I can get to know them and they can, in return, get to know me. I’ve enjoyed it. It’s refreshing to meet new people who have chosen to live in Ruston instead of California, Dallas or even Monroe. Many of the new residents I’ve talked to say they appreciate the growth and people of Ruston. They are enjoying our commitment to education, entertainment, friendly neighborhoods, city services and a hopeful future. It’s very encouraging. They are excited about Buc-ee’s, new roads and bridges, Radiance Technologies, the microchip manufacturer and Willis-Knighton Health Care Center.
I have found that very few people have complaints about Ruston. They may have a few suggestions on how they think things could be better. I appreciate that. Some have complaints about a particular neighbor who may get on their nerves or a road that has too many potholes. Most of the time, the road is a state or parish road, and we have to wait until they fix it. I share the concern about crime in Ruston, and I appreciate our mayor and police chief taking action to reduce it and to catch the lawbreakers. I’m very supportive of the $1.5 million real-time crime and intelligence center slated for this coming budget year. This will help our police officers do their jobs even better.
A couple of Saturdays ago, I put in a 10-hour day in the heat, swatting lovebugs and walking neighborhoods. This past weekend, I logged over 17 miles of walking in Ward 5. My phone app let me know that I climbed 150 flights of stairs that weekend! Did you know we had that many upstairs apartments in Ward 5? My legs are still feeling it. Why do I do this? I want to meet the people of Ward 5. I want to know what matters to you. I want to know what you are thinking.
For many of you, I didn’t get to meet you. You either weren’t home, weren’t in the mood to talk, didn’t want heat and lovebugs in your house, or I didn’t stay long enough for you to answer the door. You are the ones I still want to hear from. That’s why I left the door hanger with my contact information and a link to my website. Please get in touch with me and let me know how I can best serve you and serve our city. If you did not get a door hanger from me yet, you can reach me at 318-614-4352 or email me at BruceSiegmund@gmail.com. My website is www.vote4BruceSiegmund.com.
There is another opportunity for us to meet. I’ll be participating in The Ruston Daily Leader’s Political Forum on Tuesday, Oct. 6, starting at 5:30 p.m. Come on out and participate with me at the Lincoln Parish Library Events Center. Most of all, I ask for your support and your vote. Let’s keep Ruston moving forward. Let’s keep building a great future with the leadership we have in Ruston. Let’s keep the same mayor and the same city aldermen who have brought us success over the last 12 years.
Thank you!
Bruce Siegmund
