Man arrested on marijuana, false information charges

A traffic stop for a burned-out headlight on U.S. 80 led to a Ruston man’s arrest on marijuana and other charges Sunday night.

Antavion Jakwon Bass, 23, of Ruston, was arrested at about 9:54 p.m. Oct. 4 by the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office, according to an arrest affidavit.

A sergeant on patrol saw a Honda Accord traveling east on U.S. 80 near Heard Road with its front passenger-side headlight out and stopped the vehicle, which pulled into a driveway off Heard Road just south of the highway. The driver told the sergeant he had no identification and gave a name and date of birth that did not match any record in the department’s reporting system. The sergeant compared the mugshot of that person to the driver, and they did not match.

When asked again, the driver identified himself as Bass and said the first name he gave belonged to his brother. While speaking with Bass, the sergeant noticed a strong odor of green marijuana coming from the vehicle. Bass said there might be a few grams inside.

The sergeant found a mail packaging bag in the center console area. Inside was a clear plastic cup containing marijuana, which weighed about 25 grams without packaging. A records check showed Bass had been arrested for marijuana possession twice before, on April 29 and Aug. 11. A check on the Honda showed it was not insured.

Bass was read his Miranda rights, told of the charges and taken to the Lincoln Parish Detention Center, where he was booked on counts of driving with an inoperable headlight, driving without insurance, resisting an officer by giving false information and third-offense possession of marijuana.
